The Bagster Bag Bloggers Challenge~

This post is sponsored.

A while back I was asked to participate in The Bagster® Bag Blogger Challenge.

And what is a Bagster Bag  you may ask?  The Bagster® bag is a convenient choice for any home improvement project.  It is a highly durable, woven bag designed for disposing as much as 3,300 pounds of debris and is big enough to hold full sheets of plywood, doors and even a bathtub.  It's a perfect choice when you are tackling a home improvement project or just cleaning your yard etc.  You know those projects where your garbage can won't be enough, but you don't need a dumpster? In those cases, the Bagster® bag can be a convenient solution to your problem.

Since we are renting, home improvements are limited, so we chose to use our Bagster Bag to clean out our garage!  It worked perfectly.  And the innovative thing about Baster Bags is that once they are loaded full of your debris, you simply set up a pick up with Waste Management and they come with this nifty truck/crane thingy (yes, that is a technical term) and take the whole thing away.

Since many of you probably haven't heard of Bagster Bags, here are a few facts...

  • Bagster bags can be purchased for $29.95 at more than 2000 locations across the country (check thebagster.com for a location near you.)
  • There is a fee to have your Bagster bag picked up once you have filled it.  The fee ranges from $79 to $159 depending on your area which is 50-70% less than an average dumpster. (Pick up is not available in all areas, so make sure and check before you try to go this route.)
  • The Bagster bag is intended for one time use.  The whole bag is taken away and disposed of, but there is discount for additional bags picked up at the same time.
I'll post more about our Bagster Bag adventure (and announce a giveaway courtesy of the good folks at Waster Management) on Wednesday!  So make sure and come back then!!

Waste Management partnered with bloggers such as me to participate in its The Bagster® Bag Blogger Challenge.  As part of the program, I received compensation.  They did not tell me what to purchase or what to say about the products used for the The Bagster® Bag Blogger Challenge. Frugal Friday~

Welcome to this week's edition of Frugal Friday!

Let's just jump right into the fun stuff, shall we?

And for my Frugal Round-up...

First up, this fabulous drum pendant light from Teal & Lime.  I. love. this.  We need one of these in our house...now the dilemma is where.

And since I'm sharing fabulous light fixtures, check out this great chandelier makeover from It's Overflowing.

Next, Simple as That shared a delightful children's birthday party.  So very pretty.

And finally, I love this fun table makeover from Pretty Unique Furniture.  Talk about a statement piece. ;-)

Mission Control: How to Create a Family Command Center~

It's not like we didn't have papers... and photos... and invitations... and such... floating around before we had children.  But, once we had kids those sorts of things seemed to multiply.  And once our children started school, they seemed to multiply exponentially.  Anyone else experience that phenomenon?  And since I am one of those people that likes my refrigerator to stay clear of all of that kind of stuff...I had to find a place for it.  That's where my Family Command Center comes in.  I've had one in every house that we've lived in.  And here's my version for this house.

I knew that I wanted to  have a bulletin board.  And I wanted one that was fairly substantial in size.  Then, when we were visiting my parents last weekend, I lucked upon this old corkboard sitting unused and dusty in my parent's basement, so I grabbed it and ran asked nicely if I could take it.
Of course, the old corkboard was looking a little worse for the wear after sitting in the basement for so long.  And so I covered it with some fabric that I repurposed from my boys' old headboards.  I just wrapped the whole thing and stapled it on the back with my trusty staple gun.

Then to make it a little fancier (because fancier is always a good thing, right?) I added some nailhead trim.  And voila!  A much prettier bulletin board was born.

I put it up, along with a magnet board from IKEA that I already had, and our family calendar.  But the overall effect was a bit dull, so I had to "pretti-fy" it by adding in the DIY vinyl silhouettes I made of the kiddos, as well as a pretty stamped metal banner from Lisa Leonard, and my beloved Anthro "H" monogram.

The overall effect was happy, and fun, and definitely prettier than just having those boards and our calendar hanging there.  And now all of those papers, invitations, photos and what-nots will have a place all their own (and my refrigerator door will remain clean).

Hooray for organization!! Can I hear a "woot woot"?!?

Frugal Friday~

Hey Kids!! Welcome to this week's edition of Frugal Friday!  Last week there were almost 590 posts linked up.  Wow!! That's a lot of great stuff to go through.  And so I've decided that not only am I going to feature some of my favorites each week for my Frugal Round-up, but since there are just soooo many great things being linked up now-a-days (I'm hoping for over 600 links this week!) I'm going to start randomly featuring posts on Twitter and Facebook...so if you don't follow me on Twitter or Facebook yet, now might be a good time to start!! (You can easily follow by clicking on the links on my sidebar.)

And I apologize for the smaller size of the thumbnails this week, but Frugal Friday was wreaking havoc on my formatting each week, and I'm going to see if the smaller thumbnails keep that from happening.

So without any further ado...
This week's Fan Favorite was a post on how to create lighting and chandeliers with glass bottles from Style It Chic.

Now for my Frugal Round-up...

I just adore this coffee-table-turned ottoman from Less Than Perfect Life of Bliss!

Loved all the details of this darling Nursery Reveal from Simcoe Street.

The Crafty Scientist shared a fabulous DIY Yarn Light Fixture.

Finally, Adventures in Creating shared an amazing before and after cane chair makeover. Love. Love.

Family Photos (and some tips)~

So this weekend we had some family photos done.  Reason 1 is that Christmas Card season is soon upon us, and Reason 2 - as I mentioned in my Living Room Progress post -  is that I want to do a gallery wall, and I wanted an updated photo of the family to use in it.  And to be honest, I've also been wanting to do family portraits in an orchard for.ev.ah.  Well, when we moved a couple of months ago, we landed in an area of Utah chock full of orchards.  Can I hear a "woot woot"!?

We traded photographic services (the Hubby, if you'll recall is a photographer) with our neice who is also a very talented photographer.  And she did a fabulous job!

Here are just a few of my faves....

And since we've been in the photo business for a while, I thought I'd offer a few tips to make your family  photos fabulous (aside from hiring a good photographer)...

  • Wear solid colors...although there is a trend right now toward families wearing patterns, solid colors always look classic and draw attention to your faces which is, after all, what you're trying to capture.
  • Try to avoid wearing white against your face...unless of course, you are a blushing bride, because it tends to wash you out.
  • Although you don't need to be match-y, match-y coordinating outfits go a long way toward creating an attractive group photo.
  • If you're planning on having your photos done outside, book a time in the early morning or later evening.  That's when the light is best, and you'll avoid harsh shadows on your lovely faces.
  • And  a personal quirk of mine is to remember that not everyone has to be smiling in a photo to make it a "good" photo.  In fact, some of those where the kiddos are goofing off or even sad are the best ones because they show life as it really is.
Most of all HAVE FUN!!! Photos are meant to bring joy, right?

Have a great day~

Sponsor Giveaway: CanOrganizer

This post is sponsored by CanOrganizer.

Hi Kids!! Today I'd like to share with you one of my FABULOUS sponsors...CanOrganizer.

Who loves to be organized?  I think most of us really want to be organized.  Especially when it comes to the pantry, no?  And let's face it.  Storing all those cans can get to be a bit tricky.  Stacking them doesn't always work because they have a tendency to fall over.  Right?  That's not just me, is it?  And you want to be able to use the oldest cans first.  Right again?

This is where CanOrganizer comes in.  They offer these nifty little organizers for your canned goods.  You load your cans in, and they roll down when you pull one out.  Ta da!!  What a great idea for your pantry...or cabinet.

That's not all though.  CanOrganizer also offers emergency packs

and long term food storage

Good stuff if you want to get prepared.  Or just get organized.

And today, CanOrganizer has offered a fantastic giveaway to one reader of the Shabby Nest.
They are offering one 4 pack of can organizers, of any size.
So whatever suits you best, the winner will be able to choose.
Just visit CanOrganizer.com pick the size you would like to win and leave a comment with the size you want.  It's as easy as that!

Are you ready to organize?

And if you aren't feeling lucky, or end up not winning the giveaway, CanOrganizer is offering a 10% discount off any purchase

Just put in the code
'shabby' at checkout (expires October 31, 2011).

Good luck!!

Living Room Progress~

Funny thing, this.  My living room wasn't one of my first decorating priorities when we moved into this house.  It probably should have been because it is the first thing you see upon entering.  But since I thought it was going to be the most expensive room to put together, it went on the back burner.

But then after finally figuring out the right furniture arrangement for the space, and having a few other serendipitous things happen to give us some FREE supplies, the Living Room is actually coming together.  Last week, the Hubby painted one wall this FABULOUS deep gray, Magnetite by Martha Stewart.

Bless his heart, that Hubby.  The walls on the main floor are close to 10 feet in height.  So much easier for my big, hunk-o-man to paint than for me.  The wall is absolutely beautiful.  So sophisticated.  It's going to make the perfect backdrop for a gallery wall.  (We even had our family portraits done this weekend for just that purpose.  I'm so excited! I'll give you a little sneaky peek later this week.)

And since I have gallery walls on the brain, today I thought I'd share with you a few pieces of gallery wall eye candy that I've been collecting on Pinterest.  Oh yes!  Love that Pinterest!!

Source: google.com via Wendy on Pinterest

I'm leaning towards doing a wall with all white frames.  I think they'll really POP against that beautiful gray.  Hopefully, I'll have the whole living room finished in the next couple of weeks.  I can't wait to share it with you all!

Have a lovely Monday~

Frugal Friday~

Last week's party was the biggest to date with almost 550 posts linked up!  Holy crow, people!! That's a lot of inspiration.  My brain is on overload!

The Fan Favorite from last week was posted (for the second week in a row) by Crafted Niche, a darling PB knock-off sign.  Lovin' it!! And...lest anyone get mad that the same blog is featured 2 weeks in a row...let me remind you that the Fan Favorite is voted on by YOU, my dear readers!  So  make sure and vote for your favorites.

And now for my Frugal Round-up....

First, I thought this wax paper chandelier  from The Letter 4 was genius!  The kiddos and I have melted crayons between wax paper before...but making a chandelier?  They remind me of capiz shells, no? Such creativity here...seriously.

Next, I loved this fabulous laundry room makeover by Dimples and Tangles.  Gray with pops of coral? Simply adorable!

From Gardners to Bergers shared a great Z Gallery knock-off Subway Art tutorial.

And finally, check out this darling DIY Circus Party from Blog 529.  You know I'm a sucker for a cute party!!
