Frugal Friday~

Welcome to this week's edition of Frugal Friday!

So glad you all can join me!  This week we will be wishing a fond farewell to the Fan Favorite category.  Not as many people participate in it as I hoped, and so I've decided that this will be it's swan song.

And so the final Frugal Friday Fan Favorite is this set of beautiful twin beds posted by Fab Rehab Creations.  The makeover is simply stunning!

Of course, my Frugal Round-up will continue each week as usual.  So on to this week's round-up...

Loft Bedroom for a Tween~

My three boys share a bedroom.  It has worked so far, but now that my oldest has started Jr. High school, it is becoming increasingly more difficult for him to share with his two little brothers.  The poor kid really needs a space of his own.  So what's a mom to do?  In this case, I am considering giving up my loft office space and turning it into a bedroom for Boy #1.  I'm campaigning for mom-of-the-year.  Not really, but sometimes a mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do.

Now, it all comes down to logistics.  I'm trying to figure out just how to work it out so that the compact space can actually function as a bedroom for him.  I have been toying with the idea of a built-in bed with underbed storage drawers for his clothes to eliminate the need for a dresser...because he will definitely need storage for  more important things  - like legos. ;-)

With that in mind, I have been perusing Pinterest for inspiration, and today I wanted to share a few of the images I've found with you....hold on to your hats kids...

Laundry Room Inspiration~

Last week I mentioned that I am currently working on a laundry room update.   And as I also mentioned, in all honesty, I don't actually have a laundry room - it's really a laundry closet.  But I spend a  great deal of time using my laundry area.  And right now, let's just say that it's less than inspiring.  So I decided to do something about that.  And today I wanted to share with you all, the inspiration board I have come up with for the space.

And now for a little breakdown of the plan:

Last week's Fan Favorite was The Five Gift Rule posted by Birthing Me.

And now on to my Frugal Round-up...

Today I wanted to share three fabulous tutorials that were linked up last week.

The first is this adorable DIY chandelier linked up by Hydrangea Love.  So easy to do!

Next, Osie Moats shared her darling DIY Farm Table.  Lovin' it!

Tips on How to Make the Most of Shared Spaces~

This past Saturday, I was featured as the expert source in an interior design article in the Spaces section of the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News.  The piece focused on how to combine design styles in small spaces.   Although the article was aimed at those who might be sharing dorm rooms - it is back-to-school time after all - the ideas I shared are great tips for anyone living in a small space.

The front  page of the Spaces section, the article I am featured in is titled "Roommates by Design"

As I noted in the article, "nothing makes a room feel smaller or less comfortable than clutter."  So designing for a small or shared space is really all about clutter control.

Fun Family Tradition: Annual Back-to-School Dinner

Back-to-school is one of my favorite times of the year.  It seems like such a fresh start with wonderful possibilities to me.  I remember as a child always being excited when it was time to return to school each fall, and I want my children to feel the same way.  So each year, we celebrate going back-to-school with a fun dinner.

One of the things I like to do at this dinner is to introduce a family theme for the school year.  We decided this year that we would continue with the same theme that we had last year:  WE CAN DO HARD THINGS.  I believe that we should always challenge ourselves, and that doing things which are difficult is one of the best ways we can grow.  So, even though we used this theme last year, I thought it would be good to continue this theme through this year since it is the first year that *all* of my kiddos will be in school.

Saturday Question~

Good grief  I just realized how long it has been since I've posted a Saturday question. I love getting to hear all about you, my amazing readers, so I thought today would be a good day to start posting those Saturday questions again.

Tonight, we're having our annual Back-to-School dinner for the kiddos, a tradition that we started four years ago. This year all of my kiddos will be in school, so this year's dinner is special because it marks the first year all of the kiddos are really celebrating (or despairing, not sure which. Lol!)  I can't believe they head back next week!  Where did the summer go?

But, I'll post all about our little soiree next week...because today I want to hear from you.

What are  your back-to-school traditions - or if you don't have any kiddos - did you have any back-to-school traditions when you were a child?

Inquiring minds want to know.  ;-)

Have a great rest-of-the-weekend.

Frugal Friday~

Welcome to this week's Frugal Friday!

This is the last week of summer at our house...the kiddos head back to school next week.  I can't believe it!  And what a great way to wrap the summer here at the Shabby Nest.  Last week's party was a lot of fun!

The Fan Favorite from last week was DIY Window Cleaner shared by  Whole New Mom!  I'm all about going green and saving money!

And now for my FRUGAL ROUND-UP..

Parade of Homes~

So the Hubby and I had a little date on Saturday to the Salt Lake Parade of Homes.  I count myself a very lucky lady to be married to a man that really enjoys these sorts of things.  He and I had a really good time going through a few of the houses (we didn't have time to go to all of them) and checking out the decor, the finishes, the layouts etc.  Good times, people, good times.

Today I just wanted to share with you  a few of the photos I snapped...they are from my phone, though, so you'll have to forgive the quality...

The herringbone tile in this bathroom was a.ma.zing.  Isn't this a fabulous idea?

Beachy Table Setting~

Thanks to IKEA for collaborating on this post.

A couple of week's ago one of my very favorite stores...IKEA in Draper, Utah and one of my favorite blog conferences...SNAP got together to host a fabulous blogger event at the IKEA store. 75 bloggers (and many of their kiddos) got together for a complimentary breakfast, a sneak-peek at the new IKEA catalog and a mini-shopping spree - which was a fun surprise.

via IKEA

We each got $25 to spend on whatever we wanted in the store to see what we could come up with for a fun project. Well, I'll admit...I was being very practical. My dishes are white IKEA dishes from their 365+ collection...but I've had my eye on the blue ones for a very long time. So I grabbed four of their bowls...along with two candles and this fabulous beachy vase-thingie.

Obviously, I intended to come up with a pretty table setting, and it certainly did turn out very pretty. Beachy and pretty.  I combined my new blue bowls with my existing IKEA dishes, some seashells, and some fabric swatches in shades of blue and gray.

NestKeeping: Monthly Recap and Top Referrers for July~

Hello Lovelies!

I just realized that it's already one week into August and I have yet to do my recap from last month.  Well, better late than never!

Last month was a fun month here at The Shabby Nest!

The post I was most excited to share last month was this post about Luxe for Less, my decorating and blogging philosophy....this one was an epiphany of sorts for me, so if you didn't get a chance to read it before, you'll definitely want to check it out.

The Sisterhood of the Charm Jewelry Makers~

My sister has been here visiting from her home in the desert-regions of Southern California.

A photo that the hubby took of Holly and I during an Anthro-inspired photo shoot two years ago.

Real Women of Philadelphia: Kitchen of Dreams Contest (and a couple of RECIPES)~

This post is sponsored by Real Women of Philadelphia.

Today, I'm excited to share with you an amazing contest from Philadelphia Cream Cheese!

"Philadelphia Cream Cheese?" you ask.

"Why yes."  I say.

Philadelphia is not just about cream cheese and bagels.  Two years ago, they created the Real Women of Philadelphia (RWOP) community as a place where women can share recipes and create online friendships.  I am a part of this fun community, and through the power of the Real Women of Philadelphia community Philadelphia Cream Cheese is encouraging some of its biggest fans to add flare to homemade dishes.

Frugal Friday~

Welcome to this week's edition of Frugal Friday!

As you may recall, I was playing bloggy hookie last week because my younger sis is visiting from Southern California and we were too busy playing!  So, to make up for not compiling my Frugal Round-up last week, I am doing a double-sized edition this week with links from both parties.

First up though, the Fan Favorite from last week.  This great family command center was shared by Kaminski's Creations.  I love me a good command center.

Now for my Frugal Round-up...
